Questions & Answers
Question : Does anyone know of an organization that would help pay for a wheelchair ramp for a van?
I have a 9 year old son with cerebral palsy and he's getting too big for my car. I'm in the process of buying a used van, but I'm going to need a ramp put in and I don't have the money to do it. A few people said the Lions Club, or Rotary Club. But, I've never had to ask for money from an organization. I'm just not sure where to start.

Answer:
Another good one is the shriners, they sponser my daughter,5yo w/cerebral palsy. We haven't gotten a van yet,and I'm not sure if they will help.If you buy a new van, both Chevy and Ford have programs that will pay up to 500 and up to 1000$ of the retrofit.I looked for my favorite's links to some site's,but could not find them.Try searching handicap accessible grant.

Question : Does anyone know who I can contact to have a wheelchair ramp built?
I live on a fixed income due to my dissability and cant afford to pay anyone or get a loan to have one built. Any sugestions would be very helpfull.

Answer:
Contact your local Boy Scout Troop. Eagle candidates need to do a service project. They are always on the look out for appropriate tasks. This is exactly the kind of thing they like to do. The only drawback is there is some lag time, because the project needs to be approved by the BSA regional people, before the work can get started. They can fund raise and will work under trained adult supervision. You can even take some satisfaction in that you're helping some hard-working kid achieve a pretty difficult goal.

We need a wheel chair ramp for my wife who is depended on oxygen and is a diabeticand has copd and she has gotten to the point where she cannot get in and out of our doublewide mobile home anymore ,where can I find help for her,I'm not a carpender and know nothing about how to build one safely, can't aford to pay a contracter a whole lot of money.where do people find help without being on those long waiting list.

Answer:
Check with local service clubs such as Kiwanis, Rotary, JayCees, Boy Scouts, etc. Perhaps a local church & it's members may offer to help. Good hearted people & volunteers are in every community. They just need to know who needs help. Perhaps you could get your local newspaper to put out an appeal?

Question : What is the proper rise for a wheelchair/scooter ramp.?
My porch is 26 inches high, I weigh 170 lbs, and the scooter probably weighs less than 200 lbs

Answer:
ADA requirements are a slope of 1" rise for every 12" of run. This makes for a huge ramp, in your case 26 feet long. That mild slope will allow a person in a wheelchair to make it up the slope unassisted. That being said, you may not need that much. Electric chairs and scooters will list the maximum slope they can handle for a given weight. Since this is personal property, you may not be required to adhear to ADA requirements. I built one here in CA to get into a trailer. We were able to use a 2 in 12 slope (which cuts the length in half). If you have the room, use the lower slope, but that just can't happen all the time. There are other requirements that need to be followed as well. Guard rails are required, and landings if the ramp must turn corners in order to get the length requred. As far as materials, concrete is always the best, but it can be made from wood (attaching the guard rail/ hand rail at the bottom is tricky).

Question : Does anyone know what it would cost me to build a wheelchair ramp for a 35" high starting point?
Wooden I'm guessing would be cheaper but I'm not sure. Please only people who know what they are talking about. Tx

Answer:
You'll need outdoor grade plywood, 4x4's and 2x4's. Draw it out, figure out how much wood, and call your local builder supply.

Question : wheelchair ramp?
i want to build a wheelchair ramp at a friends house so that she can get in and out with an electric wheelchair. can anyone tell me the correct mix for the concrete

Answer:
they sell the stuff already mixed, just add water is it a big ramp or a little ramp, wood may be more appropriate if it is a long run I bet you thought you could do this easily, lol, here are ADA specifications to overwhelm you

Question : Which is the best Indian SUV/MUV for a wheelchair bound person using a rear entry ramp. Kindly advise.?
My son is physically handicapped and confined to wheel chair. I want to purchase a vehicle, which has a provision to put the child along with the wheelchair, using a ramp. Rear entry is preferred to avoid traffic problems.Kindly advise.

Answer:
I think you are missing something. Most wheelchair vans are not rear entry, most are side entry. The major decision is between Full Sized Van (typically rear entry and typically with a lift) and Mini Van (typically side entry and typically ramp) Have a look at the article below and you will see this issue discussed in the section"Minivan versus Full Sized Van". If you anyway decide on Full Sized Van, the most commonly sold van is Ford E-250 as you will see discussed in the article. Good luck!
