While its not really relevant to this question, homeowners can only include capital improvements for medical reasons (ie: a wheelchair ramp) in medical expenses to the extent which the cost of the improvement exceeds the increase in home value due to the improvement.

If you know the height difference then you can find the length of ramp by the following relationship:ramp length = (height change) / sin (ramp angle)suppose the height difference is 4 ft, and safe maximum ramp angle is 10 degree (I don't know this angle is correct, you need to look this up at ADA website). Then the length of ramp is:ramp length = 4 / sin 10 = 23 ft.

We're renting a house that has no wheelchair accessibility. Their last house they said didn't have ramps either and that their son built them. By law, you must allow handicap modifications if you rent the property to someone in a wheelchair. As part of your lease, you should (for all renters) require renters insurance to cover their belongings together with any potential liability that may arise because of their tenancy. You should also require that the ramp be built to code (whatever the local laws require as far as handrails, etc.). In addition, you can require the ramp be removed upon termination of the lease.
