Questions & Answers
Question : Is the cost of building a wheelchair ramp tax deductible if I am renting the home?
My wife and I paid our own money to add a wheelchair ramp to a home that we are renting. I'm quite sure that this cost would be deductible if we owned the home, but I'm not clear about our status with this as renters. Is it spelled out clearly someplace?

Answer:
While its not really relevant to this question, homeowners can only include capital improvements for medical reasons (ie: a wheelchair ramp) in medical expenses to the extent which the cost of the improvement exceeds the increase in home value due to the improvement.

Question : what can I use on my mother's wheelchair ramp so it's not slippery when we go down it when it rains or snow.
what would be best to use on a wheelchair ramp to stop it from being so slippery when it rains or snow.

Answer:
Try adhesive backed anti-slip tape.

Question : Wheelchair Ramp-A contractor is building a wheelchair accessibility ramp ?
(see figure) for a business. Using your knowledge of right-triangle trigonometry, help advise him how to create a ramp whose dimensions will meet the specification needed that will allow wheelchair accessibility. Talk about the procedure the contractor will need to follow to find the dimensions of the three sides and the measurements of the three angles. Consider the implications of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in your discussion and provide an example.

Answer:
Basic issue is the maximum safe ramp angle. If you know the height difference then you can find the length of ramp by the following relationship:ramp length = (height change) / sin (ramp angle)suppose the height difference is 4 ft, and safe maximum ramp angle is 10 degree (I don't know this angle is correct, you need to look this up at ADA website). Then the length of ramp is:ramp length = 4 / sin 10 = 23 ft.

Question : Liability for having Renters Build Wheelchair Ramp?
We're renting a house that has no wheelchair accessibility. Their last house they said didn't have ramps either and that their son built them. My G/F and I, as landlords, are wondering the legality of allowing the family to build this ramp and how we can put it somewhere in the lease that avoids us from being liable 100%.Rita, thanks. Most of my question was in regards to them building it themselves.

Answer:
By law, you must allow handicap modifications if you rent the property to someone in a wheelchair. As part of your lease, you should (for all renters) require renters insurance to cover their belongings together with any potential liability that may arise because of their tenancy. You should also require that the ramp be built to code (whatever the local laws require as far as handrails, etc.). In addition, you can require the ramp be removed upon termination of the lease.

Question : What is the correct rise per foot for a wheelchair ramp?
building wheelchair ramp

Answer:
The ADA recommends one foot of wheel chair ramp length per one inch of vertical rise.

Question : How can I build a simple, portable yet safe wheelchair ramp?
We have 4 stairs and I'd love to find a way for my sister who needs a wheelchair to come visit us. I don't need a permanant structure, she would come only 2 -3 times per year if we could get her up some kind of ramp.

Answer:
if you would like to build one you can go too http://www.instructables.com/id/ECJY5ZWGOMEP286QWG/ for plans or you can buy one at http://www.portable-wheelchair-ramps.com/

Question : What is the maximum allowed angle of elevation for a wheelchair ramp?
we are doing a project in one of my classes and i need to know the answer asap. ive been looking online and i cannot find it anywhere. not even in the ADA website.please help!!!

Answer:
See section 4.8.

We need a wheel chair ramp for my wife who is depended on oxygen and is a diabeticand has copd and she has gotten to the point where she cannot get in and out of our doublewide mobile home anymore ,where can I find help for her,I'm not a carpender and know nothing about how to build one safely, can't aford to pay a contracter a whole lot of money.where do people find help without being on those long waiting list.

Answer:
Check with local service clubs such as Kiwanis, Rotary, JayCees, Boy Scouts, etc. Perhaps a local church & it's members may offer to help. Good hearted people & volunteers are in every community. They just need to know who needs help. Perhaps you could get your local newspaper to put out an appeal?
